Diversity Training Institute
Diversity Training Institute
The purpose of the diversity-training institute is to provide KU faculty and staff with an intensive experience where they can focus on their own learning and development to increase their competencies in the area of multiculturalism. In addition, we will assist individuals and organizations to examine their assumptions about diversity and multicultural issues. Specifically, the training goals include the following:
  • Increased understanding of the dynamics that race and ethnicity has at the university levels.
  • Discuss the breadth of institutionalized racism.
  • Explore the group dynamics of dominant and subordinated groups on a college campus.
On the organizational level, diversity training examines systemic issues that impede a multicultural group of employees from becoming as productive as possible, and helps participants develop strategies for making the organization more effective and successful.

Brown Bag Diversity Discussions
The Brown Bag Diversity Discussions are held on Wednesdays at noon in the Multicultural Resource Center. These informal programs feature KU faculty/staff or Lawrence community members. They allow audience members to dialogue about specific issues regarding multiculturalism and diversity. Participants may bring their lunch.

Diversity Dialogues
The Diversity Dialogues are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm. These programs educate the campus comunity on issues related to diversity and multiculturalism on a predominantly white campus. Each session opens with a short program and then audience members discuss the topic in small discussion groups led by trained facilitators.

These programs are ideal for faculty to incorporate into their curriculum and use in conjunction with other assignments to help fulfill a course requirement. We would be happy to collect names of your studens and report this information back to the respective professors for grading/extra credit purposes.
SOAR
Is a component of HAWK Link that assist and motivates first-year and transfer students in adjusting to college and being successful academically.  SOAR participants meet with upper-level peer mentors to receive tutoring and to learn about campus activities and services.  The program includes tutoring, mentoring and cultural and social events.
Transitions
Transitions is the sophomore year component of our award winning HAWK Link program. It is designed to provide academic support and guidance as sophomores matriculate through the college experience.  Transitions will provide components that are similar to the resources you received in HAWK Link, but will also provide you with the opportunity to mentor incoming freshman and give back to the KU Community. This program will feature more focused academic seminars, working with various faculty members, career exploration, free tutoring, and other outreach efforts that will lead to your success here at KU.
