University of Kansas
Considered one of the most beautiful in the nation, KU's main campus occupies 1,000 acres on and around historic Mount Oread in Lawrence, a community of more than 88,000 in the forested hills of eastern Kansas.
The University of Kansas has more than 29,000 students, 2,100 faculty members and 14 major academic divisions. KU is a focal point for numerous academic, cultural and recreational activities. Its beloved mascot, the Jayhawk, is a familiar image all over the city. Jayhawk Boulevard curves through the heart of KU's campus. Sixteen buildings, in styles from collegiate Gothic to modern brick, stand along its tree-lined, half-mile arc, five of which are named on the National Register of Historic Places. These buildings contain world-class museums, classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, cafeterias, a library and a chapel.
Poet Walt Whitman said of the view from KU's hill:
"Stretching out on its own unbounded scale, unconfined...Combining the real and ideal, and beautiful as dreams."
Lawrence, Kansas
Lawrence has a small-town friendly atmosphere with many of the attractions of the big city. Lawrence has a reputation for attracting up-and-coming musical groups to play in its small theatres. The city is also known for its artsy downtown with its bustling tree-lined streets overflowing with small specialty shops, galleries, coffeehouses and restaurants that cater to students. The jazz, classical, rock, hip-hop and sidewalk music scene is renowned. Lawrence was ranked top 15 “Best Small Art Towns in America” and one of a “Dozen Distinctive Destinations,” for historic preservation, and the KU Lied Center’s badge as a “Top 10 U.S. University Presenter” for the performing arts.
