Black Student Union Mission Statement: The Black Student Union was originated on the basis of providing strong, determined, and courageous leadership and advocacy to affect our social and academic environments toward consideration of this community’s collective concerns and issues where it pertains to the educational, socio-cultural, economic and spiritual well-being of this community.
About BSU
The purpose of the Black Student Union, BSU, is to promote activities of common interest, as well as cultural and educational benefits for the African American student body. In addition, the BSU is the “umbrella” organization of many of the African American student organizations, providing a forum for them to voice their differences, goals, and ideas. Furthermore, BSU encourages cooperation between its member organizations and the African American student body.
BSU Events/Activities
BSU hosts a number of events throughout the year.
- Beginning of the Year BBQ- This is one of the first events that BSU does in the school year. The purpose of the BBQ is to introduce first-year students to the BSU community, as well as reunite old friends.
- Crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen- BSU is the only student organization to have a homecoming king and queen crowned yearly. After being crowned, the King and Queen help represent BSU in the Homecoming Parade!! Acquire An Acquaintance- BSU’s very own date auction!! The proceeds from this event go toward social events, as well as conferences that BSU attends.
- Black Love Week- During one week in April, BSU celebrates Black love and Unity, through different events. In years past, some activities included talent shows, guest speakers, and much more!!
- Black History Month Activities: BSU sponsors different things during the month, like guest speakers, trivia games, and attending conferences.
